While taxis certainly are not the most green method of travel in a large city, they're not always avoidable. Although big metropolitan areas tend to have comprehensive bus and train systems, on the occasion that you need to get somewhere fast and don't have your own vehicle, the taxi comes into the picture. If you find yourself extemporaneously hailing a taxi, take note of these tips to help your trip leave the smallest carbon footprint possible.

  1. Know your route

Sure, you don't always know your way. In fact, that's precisely why you take a taxi sometimes. But for every instance that you do know your way, make sure the driver isn't taking you out of your way. Unfortunately, some taxi drivers have a knack for finding the 'long route'. Knowing the fastest way to your destination will save you money and gas. If you're taking an NYC taxi, keep an eye on the interactive map.

  2. Pay in cash if you can

Most taxis across the USA require cash payments. NYC, however, has put card machines in all of their yellow taxis. This is unspeakably amazing for those nights when you need a car, but are strapped for cash. Nonetheless, I've noticed that a lot of taxi drivers have problems with their card machines which yields wasted gas amid sorting out payment. Using those machines, which often don't work great, always takes extra time; wasting both your time and the taxi driver's gas.

  3. Split your cab

If you're with friends, try to figure out a route that will allow for a taxi-share. Splitting one cab between a few people is usually a lot more sensible than flagging down a few separate cars if you're all going the same direction.

  4. Avoid rush hours

Rush hours aren't fun for anyone. Opting to stay a little later at work, or happy hour, or whereever you are between 5-7, will save money and gas on that taxi ride later. Most taxis charge you even while at a stand still in traffic. Do you really want to pay for going nowhere?

If you can commute via bus or train, do that. But hey, don't feel bad about taking a taxi if you're too late, too boggled down with bags, too tired, too cold, or just had one too many drinks. A taxi ride every once in a while is still a better idea than driving your own vehicle daily. Just make sure you're riding green!
