Millions upon millions of people live in New York City and the surrounding boroughs. Naturally, this is a city of waste that I live in. However, I feel as though NYC gets a worse reputation than it deserves when it comes down to how green the city is. Sure, the city can be dirty and millions of people on one island surely do produce a whole lot of trash. But I run into people every single day here who have made efforts to make their lives green. So what's the story with this city? I argue that it is green. The following examples are not only ways in which NYC is green, but ways in which your own town can be greener too.

-Green Construction. NYC is all about green construction these days. Buildings are being built and remodeled everywhere that are entirely green?or at least as green as possible. Among other things, these buildings conserve much more energy than others. They're able to exist because of demand-keep that in mind for your own town.

-Trees and Parks. People love to assume that towns like NYC don't have trees and parks. Not only is this incorrect, but the city is currently making efforts to construct more parks and plant a million
new trees.

-Green Markets.I guess NYC might be the last place where you'd expect to find a farmer's market on every day of the week in the warm months?but it is true. No matter the day, there is a farmer's market open in NYC during the warm months. But that's not all. There are green alternatives for almost every kind of store and restaurant in NYC.

-Recycling. In NYC, recycling is mandatory. Cool, huh?

These are just a few ways in which NYC is actually a lot more green than people like to think it is. Want your town to be like this? Well, insist on things like green construction and support your farmer's market.

This post was inspired by Episode 1 of Hollywood Green.
