Children that grow up green are more likely to pass that knowledge on to their children. Remember that your kids learn about conservation and the importance of protecting the environment from you. Kids that grow up picking fresh produce from their garden every night for dinner won't settle for produce that travels across the country because they know that garden fresh is so much tastier. Showing your kids the importance of protecting the planet is as easy as venturing outside. Teaching your kids to respect the planet is a lot easier when they know all that it provides for them.
- Instead of letting your child plant themselves in front of the television have them plant a tree. Explain how trees remove carbon from the air and how they work together with the soil to provide nourishment. Just like plants work with the soil, humans should be working with the planet instead of against it.
- Enroll your kids in a nature class like those offered at New Canaan Nature Center in New Canaan, Conn. Both the summer and after school programs at New Canaan Nature Center teach children to notice the biodiversity around them while giving them a touchstone for understanding the sciences. A wide variety of programs enroll children as young as two years old.
- Make sure that your kids participate in activities like surfing, fishing, or canoeing. These activities are not only outside but they would be impossible if Mother Earth didn't cooperate. Without clean oceans and rivers, we couldn't surf, fish, or canoe.
