Especially when you're visiting smaller towns, finding a green hotel can be tough. Calling yourself a green hotel doesn't simply mean giving your customers the option of cleaning linens every other day. Hotels can do much better than that. Think green cleaning supplies, installing solar panels, and energy efficient appliances. If you still can't find a green place to rest your head, then you might have to get a little creative.
5 Creative Ways to Find Green Lodging:
- Sometimes, strangely enough, a hotel's green policy isn't listed on their Web site. You have to call them and ask questions. Ask for the general manager and ask them what they do to minimize their environmental impact.
- Find a green bed and breakfast. Smaller operations are generally less wasteful because it's their own money that they are wasting. Try and find a bed and breakfast that serves vegetarian fare or fare from the farmers' market.
- Buy a Michelin Guide and find hidden gems in your chosen city. They have lots of information about the food and lodging and convenient contact information for each, so you can call and learn more.
- If you're just planning a vacation and can choose your destination, why not choose places with more green offerings? Choose places with eco-lodges, green bed and breakfasts, and green hotels. Choose an awesome eco-lodge and get going!
- Check out the Green Hotel Association®. The purpose of the association is to bring together hotels interested in environmental issues. The Green Hotels Association provides members with guidelines and ideas for reducing bills as well as the hotel's impact on your beautiful destination.
