Great Race/City of Pittsburgh
READ MORE ABOUT:
Over at Tiny Choices, Karina has written about her participation in Pittsburgh's Great Race. To her surprise and pleasure, the race has been greened. "Some of the changes were obvious, like paper cups for water instead of plastic, and most exciting: composting bins at the finish for banana and orange peels!" Karina explains. "They collected recyclables at the finish and even included a sheet in our race packets detailing recycling in Pittsburgh at large. More subtlely, they're going to plant trees to off-set the carbon footprint of the race, and I'm not sure if everyone else caught this, but the free water bottle included in our goodie bag was made from BPA-free plastic. I am so excited that the organizers of The Great Race are making an already great run even better."
Lloyd Alter of TreeHugger.com shares news of a related development: tourism that does not pollute while keeping the traveler in shape. City Running Tours is "only company to offer guided running tours of the country's top tourist destinations—New York City, Chicago, San Diego, Washington, DC, Charleston and Austin—City Running tours allows runners to explore hidden parts of cities on foot with a trained guide and runner." City Runners Tours offers both "set tours" as well as "customized runs to accommodate any athletic ability, style, training regimen or specific landmarks."
