Eating green when you're on the go is tough. It's even more difficult if business travel takes you all over the country to towns where eating green just isn't an option. A lack of organic markets and restaurants coupled with no access to a farmers' market can really put the green business traveler in an awkward position. So what do you do? Do you give up and head for the closest fast food joint and call it a day? No, of course not. You prepare and prepare well. I rarely travel for business without bringing my own food along.

Here are some of my tricks of the trade for eating green outside of my kitchen and my city:

  • Bring your own organic nuts and seeds. They're an awesome source of protein and fiber and they keep you full for a longer period of time. Buy the organic variety of your favorite nut from the bins at your local organic market to avoid chemicals, pesticides, and the excessive packaging that can seriously burden our planet.

  • Pack fruit from the farmers' market. Apples are a great choice because they are easy to carry and don't require refrigeration. They also have tons of fiber so they're a good choice to keep you satiated between meals. Bring some citrus fruits to keep the immune system pumping. It's a good defense against all the coughing people you tend to get stuck next to on planes.

  • Make a healthy soup and pack it in a thermos. The day before you leave make a black bean soup or a vegetarian chili and pack it in an air tight thermos. It's that simple to put together a meal with tons of vitamins and minerals that has little impact on the planet.

  • Bring some organic peanut butter or almond butter and whole wheat organic bread from a local bakery and make a protein and fiber filled sandwich. It travels well and it's difficult to tire of a good pb and j (or just pb, or ab).
