Laugh all you want. Yell "Nerd!" at me (or rather at your computer screen, whereupon you'll quickly realize how weird it is you're yelling at anything at all while alone in your apartment—don't worry, happens to me all the time) if you must. But this is the coolest geography based online trivia game I've ever seen.
It's called Where On Google Earth?, and the game's authors have set up the challenge as follows: every 4-5 days, they display a new overhead screenshot of an unknown location around the world, culled from Google Earth. You play by trying to figure out where the site is located, and leaving your answer in the comments. The locales have ranged from bizarre looking green craters to strangely standard looking suburbs. If this sounds like it'd be impossible to answer, think again—just about every challenge I've seen has been correctly pinpointed. And by multiple people to boot.
In essence, it's a great way to acquaint yourself with the far flung locations of the world through a lens that's becoming all the more common to view the earth through: the internet. It's always a good green thing to know your geography. And whenever it gets depressing that it seems like so many people spend so much time just staring at computer screens, innovations like this, or Green Google Earth pop up and remind me how much we've gained since technology has had us in its thrall.
