7 Free and Laid-Back Ways to Enjoy the Delicious, Warm Weather

Resolve to have fun recession-style this spring and summer season!

When the weather warms up it’s easy to be tempted by over-priced outdoor cafes, eight dollar glasses of wine (believe or not, that’s actually scaling on the side of affordable in my Brooklyn neighborhood!), and weekend escapades that are anything but cheap.

The great news is that there is a plethora of freebie activities to enjoy in the upcoming warm weather months. And in your attempt to save green—you’ll also get green. Here are seven ways to kick-back, relax and have fun—the free way.

  1. Hit the park with friends. Ask them to bring a chilled organic wine or six-pack, you’ll bring the blanket, board game and Frisbee you already have lying around the house.

  2. Discover a new safe and easy bike trail. Break out your bicycle and whisk away on a breezy excursion. Pack nuts, fruit and water—or anything else you have stored in the cupboard—to avoid pricey pit stops.

  3. Play chef and throw together a cool and refreshing salad using ingredients already found in the fridge. Have fun pairing odd-ball fruits and veggies together that actually taste good. Strawberries, arugula and a light olive oil and vinegar vinaigrette is delish—as is baby spinach tossed with sliced grapes, crumbled cheese, and almonds.

  4. Enjoy dawn outdoors with a morning meditation. There’s nothing better than waking up to the sound of birds chirping and feeling the sun slip through the blinds and hit your pillow. Make the most of it by getting outside for a quiet, meditative walk or sitting in your yard or nearby park. Soak in nature’s serenity before hitting your morning routine and work day.

  5. Embrace your inner tourist and seek out free sightseeing tours. In New York, admission to the New York Transit Museum is no cost, as are tours through Central Park, and the Queens Botanic Garden. If you’re in LA, hit the Santa Monica Pier. In Boston? Walk the Freedom Trail. And if you’re in the country’s capital, most of the monuments in DC are free of charge.

  6. Give your kitchen a break and prepare some tasty Sunshine Tea—using the power of the sun. It also makes a great activity for kids.

  7. Volunteer! In Brooklyn alone there are tons of opportunities to enjoy the warm weather while giving back to the community. Hit up Idealist.org for other volunteer options in your area.
