Morels, for those of you who don't know, are these delicious brain-like mushrooms that grow in the Midwest. I used to hunt for them as a kid. Everybody did. It was a small town. This kind of thing was fun for us. We'd bag up the morels and sell them to supermarkets in Omaha for ludicrous amounts of money.
You can painstakingly grow morels but finding them is where the real fun is at. They grow so unpredictably and seemingly against all reason that finding one or a whole batch is completely satisfying. I'm not going to give any tips on finding morels, except search for them in the spring. (That's funny to morel hunters.)
However, when you are in the woods searching for morels, you should heed some basic outdoor etiquette.
- Don't litter.
- Dispose of human waste properly.
- Tread lightly. You will be looking towards your feet, so watch out for new growth.
- Remain quiet. Don't unnecessarily frighten wildlife.
- Wear orange.
- Don't hunt on public park grounds. Only hunt on private property with permission.
- Only take morels. Leave other plants alone.
