Had I known back in middle school that onion grass was actually safe to eat, I probably would have. I loved sniffing it out (strange, I know) when I roamed around the school yard picking dandelions during recess. Turns out, those dandelions I loved turning into princess crowns are also edible—according to EcoSalon’s Guide to Foraging for Food.
So also are chickweed, clover, burdock and lamb’s quarters.
Last summer, I munched on mulberries, right off of the tree—picking enough to snack on plain and to throw into cereal and yogurt. This summer, I’ll be keeping my eye out for these other tasty, wild plants. As a newbie food forager it can feel daunting, so I’ll be taste testing one wild weed at a time.
