Did you hear about the Wal*Mart employee who got killed on Black Friday? An anxious crowd trampled over him at 5am, all rushing to get the season's best deals on gifts. No matter how deeply we understand that the holidays are about giving and loving, we seem to all, collectively, lose focus more often than not. The holidays are, in fact, about more than Black Friday savings. We remind ourselves of this by spending time with our loved ones and nourishing our bodies with exceptional meals. But what else are we thankful for in this season of giving? The holidays should be about giving thanks and respect to all of the things we have been given, especially nature.
Being green in your daily life requires a resounding understanding of and appreciation for nature.
If you want to get you and your loved ones into a position this holiday season where being grateful for nature is easy, try getting out of the house for one of these cold weather-friendly activities.
Caving/Spelunking
Caving/Spelunking is my favorite sport. However, it doesn't have to be extreme. Most caves offer simple tours that are inexpensive and still breathtaking. Caves are a great way to admire mother nature, untouched. The best part? Caves remain the same temperature year-round, so you don't have to worry about foul weather affecting your plans.
Outdoor Ice Skating
Find a rink outside near you and soak in fun while catching views of the great outdoors.
Sunset
Sunsets, no matter where you are, are a great way to gain some perspective and enjoy the beauty of this planet. Get your loved ones together and drive somewhere to watch the sunset. You'll be glad you did.
Respecting and appreciating what we've been given on this planet is a crucial step toward being fully green. How can we work to protect what we don't love and admire? Make sure you and your loved ones don't fall into any materialistic traps this holiday season. Give thanks for our planet instead!
