Whether you're scouring the web memorizing survival techniques 'just in case' or you'd simply like to know how to build a raft yourself for recreational purposes, knowledge has certainly never hurt anyone. Being able to fashion your own raft out of natural materials is a great skill to have in the world of self-sufficiency. My advice? Build your raft and try it out in a pool before venturing into wild waters. That is unless, of course, you're stranded and fighting for your survival.
Here's what you do to build your own raft:
Collect dead wood. 6-12 12 foot long logs are ideal for this. 2 7-8 foot long logs need to be collected, as well. Once you have found your wood, look for something that can be used as twine. Coarse seaweed or grape vines will work, for instance. Lay your logs together so that you've got the shape of a raft. About one foot or so from the each end of the raft, cut 2 inch deep notches. Cut your smaller logs into small pieces so that they can slide through your notches. Use your seaweed or grape vine or whatever else you found to tie this fastening piece to the raft.
Enjoy!
Rafting doesn't have to involve buying something brand new. Make one yourself!
