Living Off Grid: Cook Pasta without Pre-Heating or Pre-Boiling

Forget what the instructions say...conserve instead.

Since I live more than 100 miles from a gas line, I have to use a propane stove for my cooking. The gas comes from a tank on-site, instead of a pipe underground. Whenever it runs out, I have to make a trip into town to refill it. Even though I only have to refill it once every two months, it is still an incentive to conserve my propane as much as possible.

I cook a lot of pasta. It is inexpensive, stores well, and gives me the carbohydrates I need to work on my building. I use about half the water that is recommended in the pasta instructions and I NEVER wait until the water boils before I put in the dry pasta. By letting the water and the pasta heat up together, I find that by the time the water does start boiling, the pasta is done. I get to eat sooner. I use less fuel. And there is less water to drain.

Try this at YOUR home. You don't need to be off-grid to save gas molecules.
