Urbanites: Get Out of the City!

Plan a green travel day to cure your pent-up, stress-addled city woes

Hello, city dwellers. How're things? Busy? Feeling a little claustrophobic, maybe? All those cars, horns, subways, and the chatter, exhaust, smog, and traffic getting to you, as you bounce off the walls in your tiny apartment? There's a simple solution, my metropolitan friends: Get the hell out of there.

You see, I too share your plight. In fact, I'm banging this post out on a computer inside a tiny studio in Brooklyn without even a sunny window to look out of forlornly. My skin is pale, and when I go outside, I can't help but recoil from the sunlight. Anyone out there, besides you eccentric cave dwellers and vampires, relate? If so, fellow city dwelling folk, it's time we started planning some travel days.

Sure it might take awhile—getting out of the New York City area alone takes me over an hour. And there's no Get Out of the City Free Card—you'll have to pony up for a bus or a train ticket, or gas money. But it's oh so worth it. If you plan just a bit ahead, a day trip out of any major city in the US is never unreasonable.

How to Plan an 'Escape from the City' Eco-friendly Day Trip

Step 1. Make a Plan
My go-to city getaway is a day-long hiking excursion. It's cheap, easy to prepare for, and refreshingly relaxing. And no matter where you live, there'll be places you can plan a hike. But as you well know, there are plenty of other options for a green day out of the town—fishing, swimming, kayaking, cross-country skiing, etc. Just pick one.

Step 2. Get Out Greenly
Look into public transit—there may be easily accessible hiking trail options from train stops or bus routes. Just check your nearby state park listings for trailhead directions. Or, it's easier (though less green) to drive—just make sure you carpool with friends instead of taking separate cars.

Step 3. Bring Green Stuff
Round out your day trip by bringing green supplies—pack organic or local food snacks and try reusing your unwanted carryout bags to carry your goods.

Step 4. Get Going, Urbanite. And Godspeed.
You read the bolded message. What are you waiting for?
