I suppose the R&B group TLC certainly did have something important to say back in the 90’s when they lamented to listeners, “Don’t go chasing waterfalls” as a metaphor for safe sex.
But these warning lyrics needn’t be applied when it comes to actual waterfall chasing. In fact, adventure-seeking lads like Joe Rubenstein, Tim Hancock and Matt Gross are making it all the rage thanks to Matt’s recent blog post in The New York Time’s Frugal Traveler .
It’s precisely why three hiked the Eagle Creek Trail, known for its chock-full of waterfalls, in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge. Matt writes,
| The desire to watch water move is a primal one—I once met a Missouri man who drove his RV all over the country solely to visit falls—but it’s a desire I never fully understood. So, after a day of golfing in the Portland suburb of Troutdale, I set off for Eagle Creek, where I planned to spend three days hiking, camping and watching water fall—just about the most frugal activity there is. All you need are good shoes, snacks and rain gear. |
Though I don’t agree with their more carbon-heavy, carnivorous snacks, the H20-seeking hikers do pack apples, yogurt-coated raisins, oatmeal, granola, crackers and a chunk of local cheddar—and impressively each carry $20 worth of food which lasts them beyond their 3-day hike.
Hey—anything that sounds this affordable, fun and low-impact is OK with me.
