As long as you live in an area that gets frequent snow, you can go snowshoeing.  It’s a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors locally. Proper snowshoe maintenance can ensure that you equipment stays in working condition. It will save you money on snowshoes and reduce the amount of materials needed to make more snowshoes.  Well-kept snowshoes can last for generations.

  1. Always wipe your snowshoes off when you are done with them. Hang them on a wall where they will get good support. Make sure they are kept in a cool, dry place.
  2. Your snowshoes will need to be varnished yearly if they are made of wood. You can purchase eco-friendly varnishes. These varnishes won’t taint your indoor air quality or pollute the groundwater.
  3. If your bindings or laces are old or just shoddily made, you can replace the them. Leather or nylon replacements are available for under five dollars.
  4. A lost rivet can be repaired with the correct-sized nuts and bolts. However, most would recommend that you contract the manufacturer about getting the snowshoes repaired correctly at some point.
  5. One man fixed a broken strap by removing the rivets that held the strap down. He took an old hotel card key and cut it in half. He turned the key card into a new strap. Pretty neat stuff.
