A sleeping bag is more than just a bag that you sleep in. It?s a blanket and a bed, literally, all rolled up into one. A decent, well-maintained sleeping bag can have you sleeping comfortable in the wildest of wildernesses for years to come. But how exactly can you keep your sleeping bag in tip-top shape, so it never sees the darkness of the dump?
- Never put your sleeping bag away wet. Water hasn't been dubbed the universal solvent for nothing, you know. A wet sleeping bag can become afflicted with mold or mildew. Dry it off in the morning sun before you put it away. (Too much UV exposure can hurt the bag.)
- Repair broken zippers.
- How to clean your sleeping bag:
Outdoor Places.com recommends:
When your bag needs a bath follow the directions provided by the manufacturer. Washing your bag in a large laundry mat style machine (you know, the same one you wash your bedspread in) is better than using your home machine. A machine without an agitator is best (front loading) so drawstrings and straps don't get wrapped around the machine in the washing process or worse torn off.
Don't use harsh detergents.
- Store your sleeping bag in breathable canvas, loosely compressed.
- Don't sleep naked in a sleeping bag. Your body oils can damage the bag. It's best to wrap yourself in a sheet or just wear clothes to bed.
- Tears in your sleeping bag can be fixed with an iron-on nylon patch or a sleeping-bag patch kit found at your outdoor supply store. In a pinch, duct tape will work. When you take the duct tape off, use vinegar to remove the gumminess that will be left behind.
- If your down sleeping bag loses its loft, you can have new down injected into the bag.
- Replace lost drawstrings.
