Some words are just so fun to say: platypus, smorgasbord, pumpernickel, Natalie Imbruglia. My new favorite word, though, is also a cool eco-friendly Seattle music and arts festival, Bumbershoot, happening Labor Day weekend.
One of the most eco-friendly music festivals in the world, Bumbershoot enticed such major acts as Beck, Death Cab and STP this year to perform. And if you went last year, you might recognize some of the souvenirs being sold.
Alchemy Goods cut up the 3,000 square feet of biodegradable signage from last year and turned them into sweet eco-friendly tote bags. Check out Alchemy Goods' other bags on their web site. Their slogan may be "turning useless into useful," but personally, I think it should be "turning useless into hotness." But that’s just me.
If you're heading to Bumbershoot—you lucky devil, you—make sure to carpool. Try looking for fellow concertgoers on Craig's List or the Facebook carpool application. While you're on the road, bond with your new friend and listen to some green musicians.
No car, no sweat. Take public transit like Angela did when she hopped the train to Indio's Coachella on Alter Eco. Seattle's got a monorail! What could be more fun? Though you can probably leave your own bumbershoots (it's just another word for umbrella) at home (notoriously rainy Seattle gets very little in August), remember to bring a reusable non-disposable water bottle. Hydration stations abound!
But if you can't make it to the festival this year, you can find inspiration and solace by checking out some of the festival's eco projects at the Bumbershoot site. I'm sad not to see are Jasmine Zimmerman recycled bottle dome, the Bottle House, Vaughn Bell's Cultivation Utility Vehicle, and Katharina Mouratidi's photo exhibit.
Are you a green hipster looking for all things green and cool? Then you'll love actor and eco-activist Adrian Grenier and his team of environmental experts, who live it up with sustainable style on Planet Green TV's Alter Eco.
