The National Wildlife Federation has a powerful video out—made as an unsolicited donation to the organization—that drives home the impact of the BP oil spill on wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico.
It's released with great timing, since it's clear the need for urgent action isn't been taken seriously enough, despite the federal government's tough talk on BP and threat of a "forceful" response. The Washington Post reports that BP continues to fulfill its role as the Pentagon's single largest supplier of fuel.
In good news, there is a glimmer of hope for the endangered sea turtle: BP and the Coast Guard have agreed to stop burning sea turtles alive and to take measures to rescue sea turtles before the corralled oil is burned.
(To learn more about the threats facing the Gulf's sea turtles and other wildlife, listen to Duke University's conservation ecology specialist Stuart Pimm in a podcast devoted to this topic.)
But it's an understatement to say that more steps are needed.
Maybe this video will inspire BP and the government to take those steps. (And if it doesn't work, maybe the vuvuzelas will.)
