Biking is the best form of transportation—there's no question about that. There's no pollution and the only fuel it takes is a little human power. But maybe you're tired of taking solitary bike rides and want to bring along your canine friend. With the right equipment and training, you can safely take your best buddy along for the ride. This will give your dog the exercise he needs and give you a little company on your eco-friendly trip.

Safety Tips for Biking with Your Dog

Not all dogs can handle walking or running alongside a bike. More excitable dogs may get too distracted by animals, other dogs, or passersby to stay on the path. If your pooch is prone to darting off, this could be dangerous for both of you if he tries to run in the opposite direction! Start off slow and think about your dog's temperament when taking on this new endeavor.

Even if your dog is the perfect candidate for a bike ride, he or she may need some training on this new activity. It's also important to talk to your veterinarian to make sure your dog is healthy enough for the jaunt.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) notes:

Just like with running on-leash, the first step to bicycling with your dog is teaching her how to run beside you without pulling. Dogs often get more excited when running than they do when walking, so it will take extra training to teach your dog to stay in position at a run.

The ASPCA also advises that you pay extra attention to your dog's exertion level. Since dogs are likely to get super excited and be determined to stick by your side, no matter how fast you go, dogs may easily over exert themselves.

Great Gear for Biking with Your Dog

You'll need to invest in the right green dog gear to keep your him safe, happy, and healthy for the ride.

  • Keep your dog hydrated by bringing along a portable doggie water bowl. With all that extra exercise, he's bound to get thirsty!

  • To keep him close by your side, you might want to attach him to your bike somehow—but not just any old leash will do. You can pick up specially-designed leashes for biker dogs like the Springer and K9 Bike Jogger.

  • If you use the bike leash, attach the leash to a harness, not a regular collar. Be sure to buy a green harness, made of eco-friendly materials.

  • Always bring along a pet first aid kit—and one for you too—in case any accidents occur.

With the right gear, correct training, and the well wishes of your veterinarian, you and your dog can have lots of fun on your low-impact bike ride.
