After a summer’s worth of lazy beach days, sand castles and surf, send your ocean (or lake or river) a ‘thank you’ by giving a couple hours of your time to the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup this weekend. The day’s goal: To help clean up the millions of pounds of trash mucking up our ocean floors and beaches. It’s a great excuse to spend time outdoors, to get involved in your community and give back at the same time.
But if spending a day by the shore won’t be possible, at least take back these ocean-saving tips from the Ocean Conservancy’s president and CEO, Vikki Spruill who we interviewed on TreeHugger.
When we asked her what we can do to help minimize trash when spending time on the beach or on a boat, she told us that, Some of our Top 10 items collected from International Coastal Cleanup day include caps, lids, stirrers, straws, beverage cans, and sandwich bags – all of these things are harmful to wildlife. Here are some of her green boating tips: 1. Minimize the amount of single-use items you take out with you. For example, instead of five packets of cookies, provide one reusable container.2. Have a sturdy trash can on board with a lid fastened to the boat
3. Use a separate container for all of your recyclables, plastic bottles, cans, etc. And her final piece of advice: As for heading to the beach take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints in the sand. :: The Ocean Conservancy
