National Wildlife Federation
READ MORE ABOUT:
The dog days of summer are certainly here, and my stuffy Brooklyn apartment has me dreaming of cool nights under the stars. It seems The National Wildlife Federation is turning my dream into reality, with their 4th annual Great American Backyard Campout taking place this Saturday, June 28th.
While it may prove impossible for me to camp safely in my urban yard—my apartment's front stoop—lucky backyard owners at least have the chance to join the thousands of other folks taking advantage of their grassy plot and making a night of bonding with friends or family. It's a chance to not only reconnect with the community and the great outdoors, but also reduce your carbon footprint while you're having fun. Living off of the land for the day, whether it's in the backyard or at an official campsite, means a day off for all of the electrical and energy sucking appliances in the home—from your AC to your coffee maker.
And for those like myself who are camping impaired…the NWF is offering handy Get Ready! Guides to get you started. Topics include songs, camping tips, crafts and activities, games, and recipes for campfire friendly foods like pizza, sandwiches and trail mix. Did I forget to mention s'mores?
