Charleston is my favorite area of South Carolina. I go there all the time and always make sure to explore the green ins and outs of the city. The low country is likely the most progressive part of the state, featuring killer restaurants, preserved wetlands, and some of the most interesting architecture in the country. I actually spend the majority of my time there exploring as if I was still a little kid. I love walking in and out of the 18th century alleys and reading the engraving on the historically preserved houses. Charleston was actually once the fifth largest city in North America and the largest south of Philadelphia. Of course, Charleston was founded in 1670. If you want to see this Southern masterpiece’s greener side take a read below for some quick tips.

Where to eat.

For cheap eats you must hit the Daily Dose on James Island. It has tons of incredible vegan and vegetarian choices that use mostly organic ingredients. With daily special smoothies, organic wine and beer, and luscious burritos the size of your head, this place just can’t be beat.

For a truly local experience, hit the farmer’s market at Marion Square any Saturday morning until 2 pm. Many of the vendors showcase sustainably grown produce. You can also sample homemade pasta, tofu satay, and freshly made doughnuts.

For pricier bites, try my personal favorite. McCrady's is pricey, but truly worth the expense. They source a large portion of their ingredients locally. Fig is another great restaurant that sources a good portion of their ingredients from local sources.

What to do.

Take a surf lesson on Folly Beach to experience some of the better surfing on the Atlantic Coast. People are laid back and, for the majority of the year, the weather is warm.

Hit Market Street to purchase some local handmade goods. My mother-in-law loves the handmade baskets. You can also purchase stunning art and some eclectic jewelry.

Take a yoga class at an eco-friendly studio. While many forms of yoga advocate a greener lifestyle by promoting cleaner eating and simplistic living, the Jivamukti Yoga studio in Mount Pleasant goes a step further. Jivamukti yoga advocates veganism, and eco-issues are constantly discussed in class. The studio also uses green cleaning supplies.

Where to stay.

Don't miss the Inn at Middleton Place. Stroll through the organic garden, discover the stunning architecture of historic downtown Charleston, take a holistic cooking class, or enjoy one of the meditation programs. The hotel prepares local, organic foods and evens offers seminars on the benefits of a holistic lifestyle.
