One of the best reasons to take public transportation is the environment. The fewer cars on the road, the fewer emissions expended. Furthermore, fewer cars mean fewer traffic jams and less idling. This is all well and good, but public transportation isn't exactly glamorous. Are there any other reasons to take public transport besides the environmental one?

Yes. Here are 7 of them.

  1. Free Parking
Maybe you're lucky enough to have some pass that allows you to park your car in a company-owned garage. But maybe you are not so lucky. You might have to pay for a parking space. That fine, is indeed, unjust. Don't pay it. Take public transportation.

  2. Cheaper
According to AAA, it costs a commuter 54 cents to drive his or her car one mile. In a year, a car owner spends over $8000.00 a year on vehicular expenses. Public transportation costs less than $1000.00 a year.

  3. Safer
Public transportation is safer than driving your car according to lightrail.org.

  4. Good for Business
From the American Public Transportation Association:

Businesses save on employee time lost to delay, accident and injury on the road. In 2000, there were 23.8 million accidents involving passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs; motor vehicle injuries resulted in the loss of $71.5 billion in wages and productivity.

  5. Creates Job Opportunities
Public transportation ensures that people who cannot afford a car can still get to work.

  6. Public Health
Public transportation decreases air pollution. Air pollution can lead to respiratory problems. Therefore, public transportation is beneficial to public health.

    From APTA:

Every summer, high smog levels cause some 159,000 trips to the emergency room, 53,000 hospital admissions and 6,000,000 asthma attacks.

  7. Reduced Travel Time
Fewer cars on the road means that there will be less congestion. This leads to fewer traffic delays. In some places, the public transportation is downright faster than driving.

    APTA:

San Francisco's high-speed catamarans have cut travel time for Bay-area commuters by 30% and have posted a 50% increase in ridership.
