Augmented reality apps for iPhones and smart phones running Android OS are getting ever more amazing for pushing along green thinking. If you're unfamiliar, an augmented reality app is the layering of data over the images coming in from your phone's camera. We've seen some great apps come out utilizing it, such as AcrossAir's Nearest Subway app that guides you to, and through, subway stops.

More augmented reality apps are rolling out, and as we said, they're especially exciting when it comes to using them to promote sustainable hotspots. Enter Wikitude...and you!

Available both in the Android Marketplace and iTunes App Store, the app shows you data about your surroundings - including nearby landmarks and points of interest - by overlaying the information on the real-time camera view. In other words, as you hold up your phone as if you are going to use the camera, you will see all sorts of information pop up about what's around you. As you move the camera, the information updates.

It's great to use for traveling, but even better for you to use as a way to make sustainable hotspots more visible. The reason is because part of the source of the information comes from crowdsourced data on Wikitude's website. You get to add content and, in part, dictate how much green information pops up for the app's users.

This is a wonderful way to share the word about greenspaces with interesting stories, buildings that have living roofs, restaurants that serve food from local farmers, and so on. Check out the app in action in the videos below.

Pretty neat! If you're an iPhone user or have a smart phone running Android, you can get started right now helping your favorite green places stand out so that anywhere in the world, people see green!
