In environmental vernacular, the word "hybrid" is typically used to describe a car that operates via electricity and gasoline. Treehugger.com says: "These vehicles extend the functionality of traditional internal combustion engines by combining them with a battery-powered electric motor, which takes some of the work off the combustion engine's hands. This allows the cars similar performance to a comparable conventional car with a much smaller gasoline engine and an overall increase in fuel efficiency." (They?re awfully quiet, too.)
Hybrid technology has existed in some form for over 100 years and, like all technologies, there are pros and cons swirling around the hybrid concept. Hardcore environmental activists are quick to remind us that even a hybrid car doesn't present a serious challenge to the pervasive and environmentally destructive auto-centric culture. Greening a car is a relative concept so remember, opting for two wheels instead of four remains the ultimate eco-choice for transportation.
