Go outside on a clear summer day and the abundance of energy coming from the sun is obvious. The problem is capturing that energy in a way that is efficient. Currently, solar panels are capable of turning about 15% of the solar energy they receive into electricity. However, a group in Canada hopes that, through the use of some futuristic technologies, this number can be increased to as much as 50%.
In this video, Joel Johnson visits a lab that is using nano technology to produce more efficient solar cells. After an introduction to nano technology Joel learns about the "seeding" of gold and the cultivation of nano wires. Along the way he discovers why the future of solar panel technology is many times smaller than a human hair.
