Riding public transit has never been easier, thanks to Google Transit. With the click of a button, the slick Web app replaces driving directions with instructions on how to get where you're going on mass transit, including bus transfers, station names, and other details that'll come in handily on your car-free journey. The only downside? It's only available in a few dozen cities around the country.
Google is working to change that. At the recent TransITech conference, it issued a challenge (and presented an opportunity) to cities get themselves listed on the mapping application before Earth Day (that's April 22). It's a matter of your local transit authority integrating with Google's maps, and you can help. Write a letter (or, better yet, send an e-mail) to your local transit agency apprising them of the deal, and be sure to include this handy Google Transit link to show them how being listed can help increase ridership and revenue. And, oh yeah, all the green benefits of taking mass transit over driving, including saving their riders big bucks over driving. ::Google Maps
