The automotive times are a-changin. The EPA just released its list of the top ten most fuel efficient cars of 2010 cars, and guess what? Nine out of ten of them are hybrids. And they're not all made by Toyota or Honda, either.

No, the hybrids getting top mileage this year come from six different car makers, though the Toyota Prius does indeed once again lead the pack. This is great news--it signals the hybrids. And it offers proof that America's interest isn't waning, either, despite all those lame 'elitist' remarks from nay-sayers.

The Top Ten Most Fuel Efficient Cars of 2010
Here's the list, via the EPA:

  1. Toyota Prius (hybrid) 51/48

  2. Ford Fusion Hybrid FWD, Mercury Milan Hybrid FWD 41/36

  3. Honda Civic Hybrid 40/45

  4. Honda Insight (hybrid) 40/43

  5. Lexus HS250h (hybrid) 35/34

  6. Nissan Altima Hybrid 35/33

  7. Ford Escape Hybrid FWD
    Mazda Tribute Hybrid 2WD
    Mercury Mariner Hybrid FWD 34/31

  8. Smart fortwo Cabriolet (automatic), Smart fortwo Coupe (automatic) 33/41

  9. Toyota Camry Hybrid 33/34

  10. Lexus RX450h (hybrid, 2WD) 32/28

You'll notice there's only one lonely entrant without a 'Hybrid' attached to its name--that's the Daimler Smart ForTwo, a tiny two-seater that's ideal for driving in urban areas.

And way to go, Ford--coming back from the precipice of bankruptcy to score a number 2 spot with the underrated Fusion. By the way, you can still get a hefty rebate from Obama's stimulus if you buy a Fusion. Just saying.

Least Fuel Efficient 2010 Car Models
As for the worst:

  1. Lamborghini Murcielago (manual) 8/13

  2. Bugatti Veyron 8/14

  3. Lamborghini Murcielago (automatic) 9/14

  4. Bentley Azure Bentley Brooklands 9/15

  5. Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (automatic) 10/17

  6. Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (manual) 10/16

  7. Maybach 57 10/15

  8. Bentley Continental Flying Spur Bentley Continental GTC 10/17

  9. Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano 11/15

  10. Too many to name

That's right, coming in 10th are a slew of cars, each that get 11 miles per gallon in the city and 17 on the highway--your BMWs, Aston Martins, Porches and so on. Needless to say, these gas guzzlers are the least green on the road--but they're also some of the most expensive. According to the LA Times, it costs "$392,400 and burns 34.3 barrels of oil a year," compared to the 6.9 barrels and $770 a Prius would burn. Good thing--we'll probably see far more people driving home Priuses and Ford Fusions than such exhaust barons.
