When people think about pollution, smokestacks and cars are probably the first two things that come to mind. Most of us don't own smokestacks, and if we did, it would be weird and our neighbors would probably call our family the "smokestack family." (little Billy always in tears.) But we almost all own cars.

Green isn't just about fuel efficiency. It's also about making the things you own last longer. What if I told you that you can increase your fuel efficiency and increase the lifespan of your car? You can save money on gas, and you will save money on cars.

Recently, I read a great article by the guys from Car Talk on how to make your car last longer. It struck me that many of their tips were eco-friendly, although it wasn't the focus of the article.

Here are seven ways to make your car run more fuel efficiently, and longer.

  1. Don't Drive Aggressively
Driving like you are late for work at the Jerk Store, isn't great for your health. It's also bad for the environment. You use about 5% more gas when you drive this way. The vehicle doesn't fare too well from this behavior either.

  2. Drive Less
Not using your car reduces wear and tear. Also, gasoline.

  3. Make Fewer Small Trips
Trips that last under ten minutes can be particularly hard on a car. If you aren’t going that far, why not ride a bicycle or just walk?

  4. Unload Extra Weight
All that extra weight causes undue stress on your vehicle. The same goes for anything that creates aerodynamic drag like a cargo rack. Less weight and better aerodynamics increases fuel efficiency.

  5. Keep Your Car Tuned Up
A tuned-up engine will not only make your car last longer, but it will increase your fuel economy by 4%. Also, we all know that inflated tires make for good fuel efficiency.

  6. Use the Correct Motor Oil
Following the guidelines of the owner’s manual will make your car last longer. Using the correct oil in your car will increase your fuel efficiency by 1%-2%.

  7. Clean Your Car
A muddy car is an inefficient one. It is also more likely to rust, especially if salt is on the road. Cleaning your car increases fuel efficiency and it will keep the car running longer. Wash it at the car wash instead of at home.
