To Ed's delight, Richard Mayer shows up at the house with more green products for him to try. Ed's favorite is the solar-powered cell phone charger, but you can bet that Molly the dog's favorite would be the electric flea zapper. This handy device could become any pet owner's second-best friend, because it eliminates not only fleas, but also the need for harsh chemical remedies. (Flea lovers, sorry but this one's not for you.)

When it comes to fleas, pet owners' old standbys have been flea collars, flea shampoos, and flea powders. With few exceptions, these products are quite toxic?after all, they are intended to kill the fleas. Many flea collars even warn against use in conjunction with other toxic products because of the risk of poisoning. Cats are even more susceptible than dogs to the dangers of toxic flea-control products because they continually lick their fur. And if you have a child who's still young enough to have her hands in her mouth constantly, or an older child who might pet the dog and then eat a sandwich, well, you can see the implications.

Enter the flea zapper. It is shaped like a comb and kills fleas on contact as you run it through your pet's fur. Then you brush your pet and the dead fleas come out. The zapper's electric charge is strong enough to eliminate the fleas, but gentle enough not to harm your pet?hopefully, Fido will think he's just getting a nice massage. Aside from being toxin-free, a flea zapper provides immediate results and doesn't require you to force your pet into the tub?something cat owners will appreciate especially. It will run you thirty to forty dollars plus the cost of batteries, but should last a long time. And hey, if you really want to green your flea control, you can power your zapper with rechargeable batteries and a solar battery charger.
