You know how it is when you head home for Thanksgiving; Lifehacker describes it:
I keep getting these pop ups, he'll say. It's just been so slow lately, she'll say. I keep seeing this flashing picture of a roulette wheel that just won't go away. Can you take a look at it?
So many people give up on perfectly good computers because they think they are old and slow, but the folks aren't playing War of the Ring or building in Second Life, so processor speed is no longer of the essence. The greenest thing to do is to get those Windows computers into fighting trim:
1. Kill the spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
2. Update Windows at Microsoft Update. It will scan the machine and recommend fixes; listen to Bill and do them. 3. Switch them to Firefox: I know, it is a change, but they will like it.
4. Uninstall unused programs using the control panel add and remove programs application.
5. Defragment the hard drive
6. Give them something new to play with: Picassa? Gmail? Skype? Most parents understand "free."
Lifehacker has put all the important programs into a 17MB file that you can stick on your USB key and take to the parents. ::Lifehacker
