You've probably heard, but two weeks back President Obama signed an executive order mandating the federal agencies make some pretty strong energy efficiency and general sustainability improvements.
And do it quickly: Within 90 days emission reduction targets have to be established and a whole slew of other steps had to be gotten underway.
Now, it's time for all 1.8 million civilian Federal employees of all stripes to weigh in. From October 19th to the 31st the GreenGov Challenge is open.
The new effort is intended to be "an online participatory way for Federal employees to suggest on clean energy ideas and vote on others" that have been submitted. As the tagline says, it's "a bottom-up approach to greening government."
Only government employees can participate in the GreenGov Challenge, but where Planet Green readers can help out (assuming you're not a Federal employee yourself...) is by:
1) If you know anyone eligible to participate, make sure they do so -- and if they're lacking any specific ideas, why not use any number of the stories in Planet Green as a starting place for suggestions? We've got a great archive of energy efficiency tips, renewable energy tips, ways to green your transportation, etc.
2) Making some suggestions yourself here in the comments section. If you could participate, what would you suggest? Check out the text of the executive order, and have at it.
