Many parents with older children decide to make them pay rent at some point. For some it is after high-school graduation, others do it later or earlier. It all depends on how the family works and what the finances look like.
But there's a great green variation on that concept!
Instead of having their sons or daughters pay a fixed rent each month, certain parents have decided to make them pay the electricity bill (or part of it, depending on how much rent would have otherwise been). This accomplishes two things: It gives the young adult motivation to start saving as much energy as possible, running from room to room to turn off lights and monitor the thermostat and such, and it gives them an important green life lesson. We're ready to bet that after just a few weeks of that, they'll never be able to forget about energy consumption again!
And from the parents' point of view, it is the same financially. Any savings that happen because of this probably wouldn't have happened otherwise, so these savings actually pay for the energy-saving efforts.
