Okay, so parking lots aren’t exactly the greenest topic you’ll see covered in Planet Green. But they’re a fact of life (for now, at least . . .) and as long we have them, we might as well make them green, right? The following is a list of some of the more innovative eco-minded parking projects that have cropped up.

  1. Santa Monica’s Sustainable Solar Powered Parking Structure—Say that three times fast. Then see how fast this slightly strange but forward-thinking parking lot can get its LEED certification, which it’s gunning for now.

  2. Eco-Parking Area in Tokyo: The idea behind this inventive parking lot is to provide a stop for easy (car-free) entry into the city, thus cutting emissions in the metropolis. While you’re there, charge your cell phone with wind generated power and sip a latte in the café that’s partly solar powered.

  3. Kyocera 'Solar Grove' Parking Lot: This lot gets bonus points for big time multi-tasking—it’s both a place to drop off the ol’ jalopy and a gigantic solar panel. Rather, it’s composed of 25 ‘solar trees’ that soak-up the sun to feed energy into California’s needs.

Some pretty inspired innovation indeed.
