Cellular-toting chatterboxes finally have an excuse for talking it all out on the streets: Saving the planet. If you're tired of the same-old yakkity yak from your wireless company, here are some alternatives that put their money where your mouth is:

1. Credo Mobile: Running on the Sprint nationwide network, Credo Mobile donates 1 percent of your charges to nonprofits such as Planned Parenthood, Rainforest Action Network, Human Rights Watch, and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Plans start at $29.99 for 200 anytime minutes, plus unlimited nights and weekends, and free long distance without roaming. (Roaming charges are 69 cents per minute.) Text messages cost 15 cents each, or $2.99 per month for 50.2. Earth Tones Wireless: Operating since 1993, the nonprofit, which also deals in long-distance service and Internet access, donates a full 100 percent of its profits to environmental causes. Plans start at $20 for 100 anytime minutes, including free long distance, voice mail, call forwarding, and three-way calling. Text messages cost 10 cents each, and you won't be tethered by a contract or roaming charges.

3. NWF Mobile: The National Wildlife Federation's wireless operation is powered by Sonopia, a company that offers branded mobile services to charities, clubs, and organizations. Plans start at $39.95 for 450 anytime minutes, plus unlimited night and weekend calling, voice mail, call forwarding, three-way calling, and call waiting. Domestic roaming is free. One downside: You have to cough up an activation fee of $36 per line, although the free Motorola Razr V3ms (with a polar-bear decal) almost makes up for it. Other conservancy groups in the Sonopia network include the Ocean Conservancy and the National Audubon Society.
