Downsize Your Electronics

You can get more, or at least the same amount, with less.

As someone who rarely lives in the same apartment for more than a year, I'm pretty good at downsizing. I'm not a fan of knick-knack or bric-a-brac. When I moved to Los Angeles, all my possessions could fit in my car. The only furniture I owned was a card table and an office chair. ( I gave my bed to my brother before I left.)

One of the tricks that I've learned from being in a constant state of motion is downsizing my electronic equipment. I used to be a fan of the giant entertainment system with a space for your VCR, DVD, CD player, record player, mixer, etc, but then I moved and wasn't a fan of it anymore.

Buying unnecessary stuff is wasteful. All your electronics have a carbon footprint, and the more plugs you have the more phantom energy they'll use. You can downsize your electronics with a few simple tricks.

You can just rent them. That'll save you space. And for even less of an ordeal, you can rent them online. And if you really like the movie, download it. (legally please)
  1. Stop buying all those CDs. Instead, may I recommend purchasing digitized music. You'll save on waste and you don't have to pay for those B side flops if you don't want them.

  2. My friend recently did away with his TV. Now he has a giant computer monitor that he watches all his television and movies on. With the internet, there is very little television that you can't watch.

  3. Instead of a complex sound system, just plug your iPod into an iHome or similar device. Music will fill the room just the same.

  4. Or you can just play your iTunes off your computer's speakers.
