Just because you've made the earth-friendly choice to commute by bicycle doesn't mean you can't maintain your cyber-life. Bringing along your laptop while cycling is not as risky as it first sounds. "Assuming that you have no choice but to lug an expensive, fragile piece of equipment with you on a daily basis, there are plenty of things you can do to make sure your hardware makes the journey as safely as possible," writes Noah at Commute By Bike.
6 Ways to Get Your Laptop Going Mobile
1. Choose the smallest possible computer.
2. Place it in your panniers but use padding, perhaps a form-fitting laptop sleeve.
3. Try a 100% recycled laptop backpack.
4. Whatever laptop bag you choose, stay green.
5. As Mr. Bike reminds us: "Before you put in into (any) carrying bag, stick it in a plastic bag ... If you carry the computer in a pannier, a rain cover for the pannier will also work fine."
6. Speaking of plastic bags, use them to make your own computer bag.
Three Related Safety Notes:
1. Carrying anything heavy on your bike or on your back while biking may shift your center of gravity.
2. If you use a backpack, be sure it doesn't restrict head movement or peripheral vision.
3. Don't carry more than you need on your bike.
