All cyclists eventually have to deal with a flat tire. While you can definitely take steps to delay the inevitable, learning how to fix a flat is about as DIY as it gets.

How to Avoid Getting a Flat Tire for as Long as Possible


Here are four simple steps, courtesy of Andy Posner, that can help reduce your chances of getting a flat:


  • Maintain proper tire pressure
  • Use high-quality tires
  • Avoid obstacles
  • If you can't avoid an obstacle, use the palm of your gloved hand to brush off whatever might have gotten lodged in the tire

Get yourself an adjustable wrench, chalk, two tire irons, bicycle pump, bucket, bicycle tire pressure gauge, and bicycle tire patch kit. Then watch and learn:
