The time change has happened and it gets darker a whole lot earlier now, which means safe lighting on your bike is more important than ever. Luckily, you don't have to purchase a light in order to be seen - though there are some fancy lights to choose from. You can build your own from recycled parts.

Instructables has a great project on how to build a bike light from a broken flashlight and other various recycled parts, including a 9-volt battery and connector (found in broken toys), an on-off switch, broken reflectors and a few other odds and ends.

The project gives you easy instructions for wiring the light, constructing the box that holds the light on the handlebars, and putting all the components together. It's an excellent Saturday project that'll go a long way to both keep you safe, and keep waste out of landfills.
