The automobile is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind. It's up there with the printing press, fire, the internet and the wheel.

Cars, however, are not that great for the environment. Of course, in the days when cars were first invented, the human race was still getting polio a lot, dying in childbirth and of gangrene, and we had no idea that part of the sky was made of ozone and that it was important to control the warmth of our globe. In those days, everyone was personally teetering on the brink of their own extinction and any machine that made life somewhat more passable was embraced with open arms, no questions asked.

Nowadays, we tend to think in the long run, because we are going to be alive for the long run. One of the things that we need to think about is our cars. We're already on the right track when it comes to looking for alternative sources to power our autos, but while we wait for science to provide once more, we need to take the initiative.

One thing that we can do is to turn our cars off instead of letting them idle. A car left to idle for more than ten seconds wastes gas and pollutes the environment.
