This was the dilemma I was faced with today as I prepared to depart for Houston from Austin for Father's Day weekend...

I could either drive the 160 miles by myself and pay $4 a gallon...OR...I could take a passenger and pay only $2 a gallon for my share. I chose the $2 a gallon. And I made a new friend at the same time.

Ridesharing, or carpooling, is a potential solution for commuters who drive solo.

It was so easy!

I posted a rideshare ad on Craigslist in Austin. I received a few replies of which one panned out. His name was Joseph and we were headed the same way on the same day. I calculated the amount of gallons used based on the MPG of my vehicle and the distance we were traveling. I multiplied the number of gallons by $4 and then divided it by 2. Joseph happily paid for half the gas, especially since it was faster, cheaper, and more direct than the bus.

If I would have filled the other two empty seats in my car, gas would have only been $1 per gallon (per person)! Remember those days?
