Driving your kids to school can siphon
even more gas out of your tank than your commute to work. Why? If your kids
don?t have their own wheels yet, you may be making the roundtrip journey to
school twice a day.
When attending grade school in Houston, my
school happened to be on the other side of the city. There were others in my
neighborhood who also attended that same school, and so my parents organized a carpool. There were four of us kids in the carpool, and so
a different student?s parent would each have one set day a week to drive us to
school. Friday was sort of a flexible day since there were only four drivers
and 5 weekdays, and so once a month, a parent would drive both their normally
scheduled day plus that Friday.
This was in the 80s, so it wasn?t as much
about the gas prices or global warming as it was
about our parents freeing up time for themselves. Each parent was able to
reduce their trips to school from about 40 (twice each weekday) to about 10.
We certainly had our favorite and our
least favorite drivers and that would set the tone for the journey.
I didn?t put much thought into the
environmental impact at the time, but looking back, I can certainly give my
parents some green extra credit.
