About the Federal Cash for Clunker Program
A national "Cash for Clunker" program has been passed by the House of Representatives and Senate. Now to become official, the Senate only needs to reconcile its version with the House's earlier version, then the bill must gain President Obama's approval. If all goes smoothly, the federal Cash for Clunker program could be available as early as July 1, 2009.
Once the program is in effect, you may receive up to $4,500 from the government toward the purchase of a new, fuel-efficient car. If you trade in your qualifying "clunker" that is.
Cars that Qualify for the Cash for Clunker Program
To qualify for the federally proposed Cash for Clunker program your car should:
- Be in working condition.
- Get no more than 18 miles per gallon (mpg) combined city/highway.
- Be a 1984 model or newer.
- Worth less than $4,500—or in some cases, $3,500.
- Owned by you for at least a year
- In other words, be a real clunker!
