Every time a new iPod is released, thousands of slightly older models go on sale on sites such as craigslist, ebay, and amazon at a fraction of the new price. Why? Because early adopters must always own the latest model of everything, and are constantly upgrading. And because early adopters may have more of a disposable income, they can pay a premium for it.
This is good news for those who may not need a paper light laptop or a GPS receiver that pronounces the street names...just yet.
Buying a used, older generation iPod may save you a couple hundred dollars when compared to the price of a brand new one. And by the time it finds its way to you, it has spent enough time in the real world to develop a personality.
If all you are looking for is a way to store your entire music collection inside a tiny to-go box, then a used older generation iPod may be all you need. If you need a completely portable media device that can access the internet however, than you might be an early adopter.
A good compromise, if you prefer a full warranty, and are willing to pay a bit extra, is to purchase a refurbished model directly from the manufacturer. Apple has a pretty constant stock of refurbished ipods, for example, and comes with the same warranty that the new ones come with. This guarantees that you will have a functional product for a significant duration of time.
Perhaps the best part of buying used electronics is that someone else has already made the first dent or scratch, a very traumatic experience that all early adopters have to endure.
So, if you can wait a year or two for a completely portable multi media device that can access the internet, then you can reap the savings from Trickle Down Electronics.
And the overflowing landfill may send you a thank you card.
