All of us who toil over computers were in love with the shiny new MacBook Air last week, even those of us who can't find the on switch on a Mac. Its big pitch was "the computer that fits in a manila envelope."

Nick Cernis at productivity Web site Put Things Off has a better idea, which he came up with after following Apple's grammatically incorrect tag line "Think Different": Buy a bigger envelope that will fit your current laptop. He lists five rules to determine if you should go out and spend the money on a new Air:

1. No technology is worth going into debt for: We don't care if it fits in an envelope. If you're buying it on credit, you shouldn't be buying it at all.

2. If it ain't broke, don't piss $1,800 away: That machine you work on every day; is it really that bad?3. Next month it will be pants again: In other words, fashions change.

4. Buy it next year instead: Trust us, it will be cheaper.

5. Plan an upgrade cycle: Plan ahead and buy what you need when you need it.
