Bamboo Bike Studio

Bicyclists, wood workers, bamboo lovers and New York City metro area residents listen up. Want to learn how to make you own bamboo bicycle? Then check out what's going on over at Bamboo Bike Studio.
Head over to their studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn and over one weekend they'll teach you how to take a bunch of bamboo (harvested in New Jersey, by the way), some standard bike components, and some resin-saturated carbon fiber cloth and turn it into a custom-fitted bike you'll be able to ride home on Sunday evening.
The price for all this isn't exactly inexpensive—$1000—but that includes instruction, all materials, access to all the tools you'll need, plus a portion of that money goes to help Bamboo Bike Studio's partnership with The Earth Institute at Columbia University's Bamboo Bike Project and Millennium Cities Initiative, which are raising seed money to start the first bamboo bike factory in Ghana.
Bamboo Bikes More Durable, Less Expensive Than Imports
What's the deal with bamboo bikes in Ghana? Most bikes currently imported into Africa are made in Asia and, for the average African, cost the proverbial arm and a leg. By setting up a bamboo bike factory, only the components will need to be imported and the frames can be made from locally grown bamboo, designed to handle tough local conditions. These bikes will in turn improve transportation and access to education, food, water, and health care services.
