On Supper Club with Tom Bergeron, dinner party guest Josh Tickell, spoke of a cross country trip he made in a Veggie Van, a van fueled by biodiesel. In his independent film, Veggie Van Voyage, Tickell drives cross-country from Sarasota, Fla., through Texas, up through the Northeast, across to the Midwest, and then up the California coast. All this driving was done in a van powered by French fry oil.
Tickell is working to show the power of clean alternative fuels, especially biodiesel. How can you turn your car into a Veggie Van like Tickell?
No engine modifications are necessary on diesel tanks. Just pour it in any diesel tank and you're off. You can easily take an old diesel car and start fueling it with biodiesel at anytime. And biodiesel is easily available. It can come from so many sources including soy, sunflower, canola, coconut, and hemp oils.
Biodiesel.org can direct you to all your local retail fueling sites. You can also recycle waste oil as fuel. This is a true step toward sustainability. Some drivers order fuel drums from a supplier and make their own biodiesel from the waste oil produced by local restaurants, converting what would have been garbage into a usable product.
Best of all, it's easier on the planet. A U.S. Department of Energy study showed that the production and use of biodiesel, compared to petroleum diesel, resulted in a 78.5 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. It's also biodegradable and nontoxic.
