A survey out of Britain concluded that most women were unwilling to bike to work and cited dishevelment and helmet hair as reasons. The study did not include men, but I assume that there are quite a few dudes who do not want to cycle to work for the same reasons. Biking to work is a great way to cut down on carbon emissions.
With that in mind, here are some tips to increase cleanliness and, hopefully, bike ridership:
- Bring a change of clothes. Pack a pair of work clothes and a rag in your backpack. Wipe off the sweat with the rag. Change into these clothes in a bathroom stall. Keep a little deodorant in the pack as well.
- Keep a low-maintenance hairstyle. A hairstyle that doesn't require a lot of fuss or muss will be easier to un-helmet-hair-ify.
- Pedal slower. Going at a slower, even pace will reduce the amount that you sweat.
- Find a nearby gym or YMCA/YWCA. A Y or a gym may have shower facilities that you can use before work. If you've been looking for an excuse to join a gym, this may be it.
- Take the bus to work. Bike home. Most buses have a place to stash bikes. Catch a bus, stow your bike, get your work done, then get your exercise in. You can relax the rest of the evening.
