On February 17th, 2009, analog broadcasts will cease completely and digital television broadcasts will dominate all television transmissions. But this does not mean that you should junk your old TV. Millions of analog TVs are still in use today. Junking them all would not justify the FCC's decision to set an expiration date for analog broadcasts.
Here is what you can do to be ready:
- Simply purchase an analog to digital converter box. Even though you still have some months left, in the meantime, you will get a clearer signal that will not flicker. If you plan now, you can get a $40 credit towards a converter box.
- Sell your old TV in greenmarkets such as Craigslist and purchase a newer, more efficient digital TV. OR...give it away.
- Subscribe to cable TV. Then you can watch Discovery stations such as Planet Green. That being said, if you already have cable TV hooked up to your analog TV, you will NOT need an extra converter box.
- Turn your analog TV into an aquarium.
Just to clarify, a converter box only applies to households using an analog TV to pick up broadcasts through the TVs antenna.
